ProvenanceThis is one of Daumier’s earliest lithographs and a rare work; most impressions are colored. It was made before Daumier refined his technical skills and showed command of the medium. The caption is a play on words with the name Dupin, the French politician, and the word bread (du pain). Andre Dupin (1783-1865) held several important government positions and even suggested to the Duc d’Orleans, future King of France in 1830, to name himself Louis-Philippe instead of Philippe VII. Dupin was an influential figure, and the two men sitting on a bench in the foreground of this print discuss their chances of partaking in Dupin’s cabinet. The silhouette of a figure (likely a Jesuit because of his headgear) passes by in the background.
