ProvenanceGerman WW2 album of an unknown soldier serving in Wehrmacht 2./Infantry Regiment 448 (137th Infantry Division). Photographs document in sharp detail the brutality of the Russian campaign: ambushed staff cars and gunned down mounted units, destroyed vehicles, burning villages, haunted German infantrymen, captured Soviet soldiers, frozen horses and countless German graves. Both winter warfare and the impossibly muddy rasputitsa are illustrated in harsh detail. Of note is the album's last macabre page of a dozen photographs of dead and frozen soldiers, almost all without boots (presumably stolen). Among the aircraft photographed are crashed German fighters and a Soviet Sukhoi Su-2. A very good album
