ProvenanceGerman WW2 album of an unknown soldier who served in the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD), in France and on the Eastern Front. Photographs document his RAD training, the advance into France (and chateaux billet near Chagny) and winter warfare in Russia: trenches, women POWs, combat positions, captured Soviet tanks. The unknown soldier often returned to Germany, possibly due to injuries sustained at the front. Also includes 'Nein Onkel' type group photographs of moustached soldiers wearing astrakhan hats. Album itself - entitled 'Kriegs Erinnerungen' (War Memories/Memento) - is faux leather with helmet embossed on cover. A good album for studying the ways and lot of the ordinary soldier.
