ProvenanceThis drawing is closely associated to one of Daumier’s most famous drawings, The Soup, circa 1862-65, in which a woman is also breastfeeding a child. The title of the work housed at the AGO comes from the state and position of the woman. The figure is asleep and slouched in her chair. Despair characterizes the work, which also shares similarities with Daumier’s images of laundresses. As Michael Pantazzi points out, the female figure stands in contrast to the nurturing representation of the Republic created by Daumier on the occasion of the 1848 competition for a painting of the Republic. This is a valuable work and the only Daumier drawing in the AGO collection.
