ProvenanceCaricaturists were known to poke fun at fashion trends, and in this lithograph, Daumier ridicules the man on the left who wears a top hat. Top hats became fashionable in Paris in the 1830s and they were one of the primary means through which readers could identify Daumier’s types. The figure on the right is a merchant, and he is trying to convince the other man that the hat suits him perfectly by saying that it fits him like a glove. Meanwhile, the client appears stupefied, and Daumier really exaggerates the shape of his facial features (especially his head, nose, and ear).
