ProvenanceThis print is an allusion to the power of the press; a strong man with his sleeves rolled up handles a large hand press. King Louis-Philippe had declared that he would respect the Charter of 1830, which included freedom of the press. However, restrictions on the press soon after Louis-Philippe took over the throne were proof that censorship of the press was a constant encumbrance for journalist and newspaper editors. Daumier wanted to show that the press was a force to be reckoned with. Even if Daumier received fines and a jail sentence earlier in his career, it is through the press that the image of the King would take a blow over the first few years of the July Monarchy. In this image, the Citizen King is being crushed in the printing press and his umbrella lies prostrate at the foot of the large press.
