ProvenanceAn unattractive man shown in three-quarter view is trying to charm his audience, specifically the female audience members. Footlights at the base of the stage light up his dramatic expression; his mouth is wide open and his eyebrows are raised as he looks at the crowd. Two palely drawn female figures in the background seem unimpressed. “Le Beau Nicolas” was a ballad that had lost its appeal by the time Daumier made this print – adding to the images’ humor. This lithograph belongs to the Croquis Musicaux series and forms part of a set of works in the early Second Empire in which Daumier showed a growing interest in musical and theater stages. This type of image later impacted several of the works Degas painted in the 1870s.
