ProvenanceThis lithograph forms part of the Les Bons Bourgeois series, one of Daumier’s most important non-political series. A bourgeois in the countryside notices two hats on the ground besides a corn field, without any signs of human beings. The Parisian bourgeois (noticeable because of his clothes) not being accustomed to modes of life in the country wonders if the people who left these hats behind committed suicide. Daumier pokes fun at the bourgeois and his lack of common sense.
