ProvenanceThis lithograph is divided into two horizontal scenes (each with its own caption). Daumier depicts figures with small bodies and large heads riding street coaches in the upper scene. The coach on the left moves in a hurry since the coachman is paid according to distance travelled, while the coach on the right moves slowly because the driver is paid by the hour. The rider in the back is angry at the coachman who appears to be sleeping. In the lower scene, a couple in rainy weather runs after a coach that no longer has space for passengers, as noted by the caption. Coaches were a popular mode of transportation in Paris in the nineteenth century, and were the primary subject of several of Daumier’s prints.
