Provenance1854 was a poor harvest year for wine grapes in France and most of Europe. With the growth of international trading and interest in scientific studies in the nineteenth century, there was an increase in the number of ailments on the European continent. Wine producers were facing commercial ruin. Daumier shows two men working in the vineyards with little success at finding grapes. One man holds up a single vine with three grapes on it, while the other stands next to an empty basket. Because this was a sad event that affected many people, Daumier chose to record this misfortune without ridiculing the wine producers.
