ProvenanceProverbes et Maximes is a series of twelve lithographs in which Daumier visually depicts a dozen proverbs. After its publication in Le Charivari, this set of images was sold as a separate album, confirming the popularity of the works. On reprend son bien ou on le trouve shows a man aggressively trying to undress another man on the street – which has yet to be transformed by Haussmanization. Both men wear top hats suggesting their bourgeois status. The thief will gladly “recover his goods where he finds them” the victim would likely do just the same. The image practically implies that what we find is to make up for what we lose.
