ProvenanceThis image showcases the politician, Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877), and the Prince de Joinville (1818-1900), Louis-Philippe’s third son. Thiers was caricatured at length during the nineteenth century and was one of Daumier’s favorite targets. He occupied various roles during his political career, and in 1848, after the February Revolution, he supported the monarchist movement of Louis-Napoléon. Thiers opposed the general election laws in 1850 and did not want to see any potential successors from the Orleanist dynasty meddle with the political scene in France. The Prince de Joinville had joined his father in exile in England after the 1848 Revolution broke out, and is seen approaching a mass of land by boat in Daumier’s lithograph. Thiers, who stands on shore, is blowing through a horn and telling the Prince de Joinville that it is not the right time to set out on the land – implying that the Prince is not welcome in France.
