ProvenancePrints from the En Chine series address the intervention of France and England in China in the late 1850s. The current image shows a Frenchman boasting about his spoils – two women. His ability to allure two women simultaneously inflates his ego, because on French soil he had a hard time charming a single lady. The man holds his chin up high and his arms interlock with those of the two women who stand on each of his sides. To please the man, the women wave fans at him. Interestingly, neither female figure looks Chinese. Daumier’s print is likely making a comment about the French and Chinese races, yet the exact meaning of the work remains somewhat of an enigma.
