ProvenanceLouis- Philippe and Tsar Nicholas of Russia encourage the brothers Pedro and Miguel to fight for the Portuguese throne. Louis-Philippe pushes Pedro forth, while the Tsar attempts to motivate Miguel. It is the death of Ferdinand VII in 1833 that led to this international dilemma. The Russian Tsar desired the Portuguese throne and is here shown in the dress of a Cossack. Louis-Philippe is portrayed in his “Citizen King” attire and points to the crown on Miguel’s head. Shortly after the publication of this print, Pedro took Lisbon and dismantled his brother’s regime. France however, remained aloof, despondent and disengaged. Perhaps, government critics felt it would have best suited the King’s “liberalism” to have supported Pedro’s cause, rather than stand back and silently condone an absolute regime. The intended reading of this work still remains somewhat enigmatic.
