ProvenanceJean Marie Harle Père (1763-1838) was the deputy of Calais between 1815 and 1837. He did not contribute much to discussions in the Chamber. He sneezed a lot and would blow his nose loudly; the scene he made in parliament sessions became a subject of mockery. In Daumier’s print, snout hangs out of Harle Père’s nose. He holds a large handkerchief close to his face in an attempt to clean himself up. Other works of Harle Père also place emphasis on his nasal features.
