ProvenanceBaron Joseph de Podenas (1782-1851) was involved in the fall of Charles X and could be considered a liberal at the time. However, when Louis-Philippe took over the throne, Podenas changed allegiances and became a conservative politician. Philipon’s team nicknamed him “Pot de Naz” and his large frame and head were easy targets for caricaturists. In Daumier’s print, Podenas holds a paper in his right hand that says “improvisations”. This could be a reference to his shifting ways in political principles. Unlike some of the other representations of politicians made by Daumier and other caricaturists for La Caricature and Le Charivari, this is a full-length portrait. The figure’s clothing is a vital part of his social identity (a mode of depiction that became part of Daumier’s style of caricaturing people over the next forty years). This print can be compared with the bust size lithograph Daumier made of Podenas (Delteil 152) and the clay bust the artist produced of the politician.
