ProvenanceFélix Barthe (1796-1863), like Podenas, began his career as a liberal and joined the conservative party during the reign of Louis-Philippe. He had defended the rights of the liberal press earlier in his career, but having joined the governing body of the July monarch, he was seen as a turncoat by liberal newspapers in the 1830s. He was particularly infamous for his involvement in creating a law in 1834 that forbade the possibility of political associations to meet in groups of twenty or more people. He was cross eyed, a detail Daumier highlighted in his works, and an arrogant politician, making him a prime target for caricaturists. Barthe also held a prominent role during Napoleon III’s reign as a senator.
