ProvenancePierre-Paul Royer Collard (1763-1845) was a key figure under the Restoration and the July Monarchy. He was deputy of the Marne region for nearly thirty years and had superior oratory skills. This landed him important positions, such as professor of the history of philosophy at the Sorbonne and the vice-president of l’Assemblée nationale. Although he refused to take his seat as vice-president in the first four years of Louis-Philippe’s reign, Royer-Collard did adhere to the principles of the July Monarchy. As he aged, he lost his hair and began wearing a wig, and it is this aspect of his outlook that caricaturists lampooned. Royer-Collard’s wig gave him an odd appearance and in an attempt to highlight this, in the background of this lithograph, Daumier depicted a wooden post wearing the same wig and clothing accessories that Royer-Collard sports.
