ProvenanceJean-Claude Fulchiron (1774-1859) strove to be a writer and was a deputy from 1831 to 1845. He preferred working in peace and took part in the decision to prohibit people from “charivariser” (large, noisy gatherings with people whistling and clamoring) in provincial areas, such as Chalon-sur-Saone. Philipon’s second newspaper, Le Charivari, took its name from this concept and clearly opposed Fulchiron’s values. Daumier shows Fulchiron with his eyes half closed, a silly zombie-like expression, and a sense of refinement that members of Le Charivari disliked.
