ProvenanceThe first state of this print notes the years 1830 and 1833 below the two portraits of Louis-Philippe. The dates have likely been removed due to censorship for the printing of the second state. The intended message of the image remains the same however, illustrating the aging appearance of the King over the first three years of his reign. The King is clearly younger looking in the portrait on the left; he has longer hair, thicker sideburns, and is leaner than in the portrait on the right. Although the King is not smiling in either image, he has grown grumpier over time. The meaning of the work is not dissimilar from Daumier’s Le passé. – Le present. – L’Avenir (Delteil 76).
