ProvenanceA scrapbook compiled by Alan Fraser Fairlie of an 85-day cruise trip beginning on March 23, 1950. Alan F. Fairlie was travelling aboard the Queen Mary cruise ship as a first class passenger. Departing from New York, the ship travelling to South Hampton, London. Landmarks visted included: Grosvenor House, Westminister Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, and Piccadilly Circus. The Union Castle Line, "Bloemfontein Castle," is the name of the ship that Alan Fairlie spent nine week aboard, travelling to 3 continents, 15 countries, and a total of 18,700 miles. Departing from London, England, the ship made stops in Las Palmas, Spain; the tropical island of St. Helena; South and East Africa; Cape Town; Port Elizabeth; East London; Durban, Mozambique, Beira and Zanzibar; Kenya; Yemen; Cairo, Egypt; Genoa and Portofino, Italy; and lastly before returning to London, Marseilles, France. After returning to England in August, Alan Fairlie explored London which he called "the largest city in the world," before travelling back to New York and eventually returning to his hometown of Toronto, Ontario. The scrapbook includes Alan Fairlie's boarding pass from the Queen Mary and accompanying luggage tag, embarkation notice for Union Castle Line dated March 24, 1950, ten postage stamps from various destinations, souvenirs including the following: silver leaves from South Africa, paper cutouts, Union Castle dinner menu, maps, tickets, various handwritten notes and drawings, South African dollar bill, pamphlets, receipts, newspaper clippings, photographs and postcards, and a movie stub from Tom Arnold's "Rosy Mary."
