ProvenanceThe second of two diary-like-albums by an unnamed Wehrmacht radio operator attached initially to an anti-aircraft unit. Extensive handwritten text accompanies photographs of his unit's advance to within 18 kilometres of Moscow, and then the long retreat west back across the USSR through Smolensk, Minsk and Tiraspol. Of note are photographs of Red Army prisoners, Romanian allies on horseback, destroyed bridges and river convoys near Krementschug. Also contained are chilling images of winter warfare, burning villages and many field cemeteries. The photographer's candid commentary and snapshots of Christmas celebrations in candlelit bunkers leaven the collapse of German hopes. His war service draws to a close in Italy (photographs of military funeral plus picture postcards of Rome, Orvieto, Siena and Florence) and then in the final Battle of Berlin (no images).
