ProvenancePersonal album of US Air Force Staff Sergeant James B. Anderson who served in the Philippines and occupied Japan in the early 1950s. Photographs - which are not in chronolgical order - document his departure from the United States by ship, his service at unidentified Pacific bases and his arrival in Japan. Anderson's personal snapshots are mounted alongside commercial photographs of temples, geishas, theatres in Okinawa and Higaonoa, village and city scenes (both city and aerial). Album also contains commercial photographs of the Pacific war: advancing American tanks, skulls, POWs, both dead and beheaded Japanese soldiers. Some captions. Anderson appears to have lodged or lived for a time with a Japanese family. Page 5 shows Douglas MacArthur (centre) Ephemera includes a copy of the Japanese surrender document and two 'Domain of the Golden Dragon / Ruler of the 180th Meridian' certificates, the unofficial United States Navy award given to crew members of ships which cross the International Date Line.
