ProvenanceA beautifully composed album of an unknown soldier (born 1919/1920 in Thuringia?) that opens with strong photographs of his childhood, school days, his time with a fencing club, a family wedding and numerous holiday coach trips. There are good photographs that document the rise of Nazism and, with the approach of war, the young man begins his patriotic Arbeitdienst service, joins the Reichsarbeitsdienst (translated as 'Reich Labour Service') and then the Wehrmacht. An unremarkable record of service in the RAD (work details, drills, minor war games, barracks life) is enhanced by his personal photographs of the invasions of Czechoslovakia, Poland, Belgium (Boullion) and France (Tannay). Of special interest are images of advancing German columns, fleeing refugees, bomb damaged cities and a destroyed armoured train. Also included are photographs of the Westwall (Siegfried Line) before the invasion of France. In 1940 the unknown soldier is wounded on the road to Rethel (Ardennes) and the album concludes with numerous images of his rehabilitation in a German military hospital. Captioned with naive handdrawn illustrations.
