ProvenanceSecond of four albums by Lt. Gertrude A. Brazil, a US Army nurse from San Francisco on active service in North Africa and Sicily, and subsequently in the invasions of the Italian mainland and France (Operation Dragoon). Photographs document her arrival in Palermo by landing craft (August 1943) and the establishment of the 59th Hospital in the city. Included are many images of fellow nurses, doctors and wounded patients as well as general views of Palermo and its residents (bomb damaged houses and churches, street markets, a 'Group of Wops'). Brazil also photographed many recreational events and excursions (beach outings, sailing trips, the Doctors' Bawl - Jolly Up party, pistol target practice, visit to the Capuchin Catacombs, evening gown dressmaking/modelling, road trips to Erice and Mondello, official leave to Naples, Pompeii, Capri and Tunis in April 1944). Of particular interest are single snapshots of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower's visit to Sicily (Trapani), General Patton's tank in Palermo and various aircraft (Douglas C-47 Skytrain, P40, P38, RAF Spitfire, crashed German ME109 and Italian bombers). During her eight months in Palermo, Brazil took part in 2,084 medical operations. As well as its 531 photographs and official US military postcards ('Chow Call, Palermo', 'Body Cast', 'Slums'), ephemera in the album includes Italian and Allied Military Currency banknotes, various dance invitations and Brazil's personal poems including 'Panorama of Sicily').
